After researching different Grand Junction bakeries online I decided to make a little field trip to The Cake Cottage. I wanted my cake related article to be as accurate as possible and let’s be honest I was hoping to get a taste of some of that yummy cake!

The first thing that surprised me when I walked in to the bakery was the rich smell of coffee combined with the homey smells of cakes and pastries.  The Cake Cottage is well-known for its beautiful and delicious wedding cakes. Something you may not know is they are a top contender for the best cup of Joe in town! Michael, our graphic designer would like to recommend “the great white”, a coffee drink with white chocolate and coconut. If you’re not a coffee drinker check out the sweets counter. They have freshly made mini pies, cannolis, pumpkin cheesecake bars, fluffy cream puffs ….I better stop this is making me hungry!

After meeting with Deb (the owner) I learned that a lot of things have changed in the cake business lately.  With the popularity of cake related shows on TV many brides are thinking outside the box when it comes to their wedding cake.  Deb says fondant cakes are very popular right now. It gives the cakes a smooth luxurious surface you’re unlikely to achieve with tradition cake frosting methods. Another welcome change in the cake business is the TASTE of the cakes. Wedding cakes are no longer limited to white cake with white icing.  With 24 different cake flavors and 7 different types of fillings, the possibilities are endless.

To sample inventive flavors  like Pink Champagne cake with cream cheese and strawberry filling or Norwegian apple walnut cake with caramel filling attend the free cake tasting held every 3rd Sunday of the month from 11am-2pm.  Deb and her friendly staff love a challenge whether it’s an edible work of art you’re looking for or a healthy gluten-free or diabetic friendly cake.  They have something for everyone. I’m going back for another cannoli!
