The story of Spring Creeks Ranch began in 1911, when Ben Gianinetti, a former cross-country skiing border patrol officer from the Italian Alps, discovered his paradise in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley. Captivated by the stunning Mt. Sopris and world-class fishing opportunities in Carbondale, Ben would ride horseback 30 miles along what is now Highway 82 to court his future wife, Alphonsine. After marrying, the couple worked as crop sharers in Woody Creek near Aspen, saving every penny until they could purchase their dream property—Spring Creeks Ranch—in 1927. Despite facing the hardships of the Great Depression, the Gianinettis successfully raised four children while nurturing the land, its spring creeks, and the exceptional fishing habitat along the Roaring Fork River. Today, their legacy lives on through Ernie Gianinetti and his wife Carol, who, alongside their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, continue to honor their agricultural roots while operating a thriving event center, equestrian facility, and fly fishing club. What is the most rewarding part of your job? The most rewarding part of being a wedding venue is witnessing those pure moments of joy that unfold throughout the day – from the first look on our willow island with Mt. Sopris as the backdrop, to seeing generations of families come together on the dance floor as the sun sets over our meadows. There’s something deeply fulfilling about providing a space where love stories take root and families begin their next chapter together. When we see happy couples stealing quiet moments by the spring creeks, or grandparents sharing stories on the front patio, or children running freely through our grounds, we’re reminded that we’re not just providing a venue – we’re creating a place where cherished memories are born. After all these years, the excitement of each new celebration never fades. Every wedding adds its own special chapter to our ranch’s story, and there’s no greater privilege than being trusted with these most precious of days.
What is the most challenging part of your job? The challenges of running a wedding venue in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley come down to both nature and logistics. Mountain weather can be unpredictable – even in summer, we need to be ready for sudden afternoon showers, intense sun, or unexpected wind gusts that can affect outdoor ceremonies. Our team has mastered the art of quick transitions to weather-protected spaces, but it requires constant vigilance and detailed backup planning for every event. Then there’s the delicate balance of maintaining a working ranch while creating a pristine wedding setting – coordinating property maintenance, hayfield schedules, and endless landscaping around events requires precise timing and communication. But perhaps our biggest challenge is navigating the ever-changing landscape of agriculture in our valley. As our region experiences growing pains and development pressure, we’re constantly working to preserve our heritage while adapting to new realities. We want each wedding to feel luxurious and seamless, yet still genuine to our roots and mountain heritage. It’s a challenging balance, but seeing families celebrate in this place we love makes every challenge worth solving.
